Twenty-two years ago I sat in my high school sociology class when the question of “what would have happened if the Nazis won” popped into my head. I wrote a screenplay (as I was going to be the next big historical biopic screenwriter in my 17 year old mind). It was from the perspective of a teenage girl and what her life would have been like. I thought I had wrote the next Schindler’s List. Luckily I put that in a drawer for nearly two decades.
I found it during covid and re-reading it, the 17 year old version of me was so very naive. However, I hadn’t actually lived any life at that point. The mid-thirties version of myself had. The question again popped up of “what would have happened if the Nazis won”? This time, I had lived some life and I was older. My response was not the same as my teenage self. That is how the story of THE CHOICES WE MADE and ultimately the sequel, THE PATH WE TAKE was sketched out. In the books it is two sisters at two different stages in their life, when in reality it was me picking up this project in two different decades of life.
What has come out of this twenty year project is something I can be proud of it. Especially in today’s world, where there are two many parallels to the world I created in an alternative history way. It’s bittersweet and I definitely did cry as I read the last few words of the final chapter, not just because of how important those words are in today’s world but because I knew this was the end of my journey with Grace Niemoeller and her struggle to figure out how to do what is right in a world that made it very difficult to do so.
While one door closes, another opens…
What that door may be? I’ll give you clues. Ireland. History. Romance. A bit of a change of pace from something that has been a heavy topic for two decades. 🙂
